Were you aware that July 15th is National Pet Fire Safety Day?

Were you aware that July 15th is National Pet Fire Safety Day? We encourage you to spread the news. Emergencies within a home can happen at any moment, and in a multitude of ways. There are steps that you can take to prepare yourself, your family, and your pets when they do. Since National Pet Fire Safety Day will be here next week, we’ve put together some vital tips concerning fire safety.

Monitored Smoke Detectors is a Smart Choice

Do you live in a fire-prone area? Or are you merely concerned about a fire potentially starting? Monitored smoke detectors help give you peace of mind and a sense of security. If a fire starts, firefighters are notified and can respond, even if you aren’t home

Be Aware of Where Your Canine Companion or Feline Friend Likes to Nap

If you need to evacuate your home quickly, knowing this information comes in handy. Pets are harder to round up if they sense stress in the environment, especially cats. We recommend that you practice putting your pets in a crate ahead of time, so that it becomes a positive experience for them, instead of one that induces panic. Otherwise, they may go running when you need to pull out the crate during an emergency.

Create an Evacuation Plan and Practice it Often

Every member of your family should know how to escape your home if they ever need to do so. Go over multiple escape routes. Fire safety is all about ensuring that your family knows what to do, where to go, and how to round up the pets safely.

How to Pet-Proof Your Home

Ensure that it isn’t possible for your pets (or anyone in your home) to start a fire accidentally. Make sure that there aren’t any loose wires in the house. Candles should be far out of reach. If candles are lit, or the fireplace is on, make sure that you’re by your pet’s side, never leaving them unattended.

Rescue Alert Stickers Are Relevant

Rescue alert stickers alert people that pets are in the home. Place them on or near your front door so that rescue workers can see them. Make sure that these stickers include the types and amount of pets in your house, along with the name of your veterinarian and their number. We also recommend microchipping your pet. Unfortunately, if your pet becomes lost during an emergency, a microchip is a reliable way to locate your pet.
