Keeping Your Pet Safe on Valentine’s Day

It’s a fun idea to take a photo with your pet on Valentine’s Day

What a lovely and loving holiday Valentine’s Day is! On Valentine’s day, you can celebrate many forms of love, such as romantic love, familial love, the love of friendship, and of course, you can show your pets that you love them. While you spread love, always keep safety in mind. Here are some Valentine’s Day pet safety tips along with fun ways to celebrate this day of love with your pets!

Bouquets and Pet Safety

If you send a floral arrangement to a cat owner, make sure that it has no lilies. If you are the one receiving the bouquet, examine the flowers. If you notice any that could be potentially dangerous to your pet, remove them. If you see that your pet has symptoms of lethargy, vomiting, or diarrhea, then they may have ingested a toxic plant. Curious to know what’s toxic? The ASPCA has a list covering that specific concern. We also suggest that you de-thorn roses or other flowers that may have thorns. Your pet stepping on a thorn would be pretty painful.

Be Careful With Chocolate

Veteran pet owners know that many types of chocolate are life-threatening when ingested by pets. Methylxanthines (caffeine-like stimulants) affect the gastrointestinal tract (mouth, stomach, esophagus, and intestines), as well as neurologic (brain, nerve roots, etc.), and cardiac (heart) function. As a result, pets can end up vomiting, suffering from diarrhea, going through seizures, and have an elevated heart rate. High-fat content in lighter chocolates can also cause pancreas inflammation. If this sounds scary, then that’s because it is. We advise that you keep the sweet treats far from your canine companion or feline friend.

How to Show Your Pet That You Love Them on Valentine’s Day

Here are a few fun ideas highlighting how you can bond with your dog(s) and cat(s) on Valentine’s Day:

  • Taking them to the local pet store and buying red and pink goodies such as toys, leashes, collars, and sweaters
  • Having a photo shoot with your pet (in the cute sweater that you just bought them)
  • Making pet-friendly heart-shaped treats
  • Volunteering
  • Giving your canine companion a good belly rub
