What is Diabetes?

Diabetes Mellitus is a well-known condition, as it affects both people and pets. Diabetes develops when the body makes little to no insulin and the body stops being able to utilize it properly. Insulin is important because it allows the sugar in the bloodstream to enter the body’s cells, which then use that sugar (or glucose) for energy. In the case of diabetes, glucose is not able to get into the cells to be used as energy and instead, it inappropriately builds up in the bloodstream.

How is Pet Diabetes Treated?

Veterinarians use medication, special diets, and monitoring systems that are like the ones that people or endocrinologists use. Just like people, your pet will need insulin. For dogs, insulin will be a lifelong treatment. While it is possible for some cats to go into remission after treatment, for most cats it is a lifelong disease as well. A diet change may help regulate their sugar levels and these foods can be prescribed by your veterinarian. They are a mainstay of diabetic health. Lastly, monitoring your pet’s blood sugar is a big part of managing diabetes. It sounds scary, but don’t worry because we’ve got you covered! If your pet is diagnosed with diabetes, we will walk you through everything step by step to make sure you are confident and comfortable with how to manage your pet’s disease.

What are the Signs and How Do I Help With Prevention?

Look out for increased thirst and excessive urination. Your pet may eat excessively but lose weight at the same time. Loss of fur, dull hair, and your cat neglecting to groom themselves can also be seen. To keep your pets healthy, make sure that they have regular examinations with one of our veterinarians, keep your pets active, buy appropriate pet food, and don’t overfeed them. The best way that you can participate in Pet Diabetes Month is by taking your pet’s health seriously and spread the message.
