Pet Dental Health Month relating to cats and dogs
Were you aware that February is Pet Dental Health Month? Dental disease affects pets just as much as they do people, if not more. Dental disease impacts 80% of dogs over the age of three and 90% of cats over the age of four. This health issue is not one to take lightly. We have experience in surgical services as it relates to dentistry. Signs/Symptoms of Dental Disease
We suggest that you allow us to check your pet’s teeth at least once a year during their annual exam to aid in the early prevention of dental disease. If you observe any of the following signs/symptoms, then you should bring your pet into us sooner:
- Bad Breath
- Loose or Broken Teeth
- Extra Teeth or Retained Baby Teeth
- Discolored Teeth
- Teeth Covered in Tartar
- Abnormal Drooling or Chewing
- Your Pet Drops Food From Their Mouth Often
- Refusal or Less of a Desire to Eat
- Mouth Bleeding
- Swollen Areas Around the Mouth
What Are the Risks of Neglecting Your Pet’s Dental Health?
Dental disease can throw off your pet’s entire immune system. Poor oral hygiene has been linked to diabetes, heart disease, and gum disease. When bacteria-ridden plaque forms under the gumline and is not taken care of, then this can incite a pet’s immune system. An inflammatory response can ensue, and then gingivitis can form, leading to gum disease when not treated. Bacteria can also destroy the surrounding tissue in the process.
How to Prevent Dental Disease
Prevention starts with regular cleaning and brushing (with a small or child-sized bristled brush), but it shouldn’t end there. More importantly, you should bring your pet in for annual exams that include a comprehensive oral exam. We can detect issues that may go beyond what the eye can see.
