Happy National Mutt Day!

Were you aware that July 31st is National Mutt Day? That’s right! It’s a celebration of all the mixed-breed dogs. December 2nd is also National Mutt Day, meaning that you and the entire pet parent community can celebrate these unique canine companions twice a year. The magic of mutts merely isn’t discussed enough. Today, we’ll share some of our top reasons why owning a mutt is worth it.

Mutts are Unique

Is your goal to own a pet with a unique character and look? A mixed-breed dog is an ideal companion for you. You can look forward to distinct patches of color and markings throughout the fur and ears that don’t match perfectly, making you wonder about your precious pup’s lineage. You might be pleasantly surprised that your mutt inherited some of the best characteristics of the different breeds in their family tree regarding affection, intelligence, and athleticism. From droopy to perky ears to snub or pointed snouts, the possibilities are limitless when it comes to mixed-breeds’ visual appearance. If you’re really curious about your mutt’s genetic makeup, you can get a DNA test done with us to find out.

Adopting a Mixed-Breed Helps to Save a Life

If you don’t own a dog or want to add another canine companion to your family, adoption is beneficial. For one, adopting a pet is more affordable than buying one outright. What’s even better is that your options will still be unique and varied. There are many different types of dogs at shelters with various temperaments. From calm to energetic, and in between, you’ll find a precious pooch that will fit into your family. Also, dogs that come from shelters typically come spayed or neutered already, saving you even more money.

These are all excellent advantages, but the most significant benefit of adopting a mixed-breed dog is saving a life. According to BARCS, each year, 12,000 dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies come into the shelter, needing love and a home. The ASPCA reports that 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. However, this number has declined, and one of the reasons is an increase in adoption. Adopting a pet is a good deed. Owning a pet, in general, adds fulfillment to your life.

How to Celebrate National Mutt Day

You can celebrate this special day by catering to your fur baby. We’re sure that you show them attention and love each day, but make sure to show them a little extra on July 31st. Feed them a new, tasty treat or one of their old favorites. We recommend giving them a good belly rub, taking them out on a hike (make sure it isn’t too hot), and taking plenty of pictures for social media with the hashtag #NationalMuttDay. Also, remember that shelters and humane societies always need volunteers. Most importantly, keep your canine companion(s) up-to-date on their vaccinations and bring them into our experienced veterinarians to maintain their health.
